Stress now the most common cause of long-term absence from work

A new report identifying stress as the single most common cause of long-term absence amongst workers in Britain has been published by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and Simplyhealth. For the first time since the report was first published 12 years ago, stress has overtaken conditions such as cancer and repetitive strain injury as the leading cause of long-term sickness.

The relationship between job security and stress is a point of focus in the report, which reveals that staff at companies where redundancies are being planned are more likely to experience mental health problems. The sharpest rise in stress-related absence has occurred in he public sector, where cuts and restructuring are happening at a rapid pace.

However, many organisations were also praised in the report for putting more emphasis on the wellbeing of their employees at a time when budgets are becoming tighter. 592 employers were surveyed for the report, and nearly 75% of those offered counselling services to their workers. Nevertheless, employers still need to go further to reassure worries staff in a climate of economic instability, according to the CIPD.

The economic slowdown is also linked to a reduction in the rate at which employers are recruiting new staff in a new report published by the Recruitment Employment Confederation and KPMG. In September, the rate at which temporary and permanent placements increased was the lowest for 2 years. The job market could begin shrinking before it recovers, according to the report.

The figures also show that whilst stress is the leading cause of long-term absence, concerns about redundancy are also forcing more people to go into work when they are ill. The CIPD has urged employers to help put an end to this culture of ‘presenteeism’.

Fresh investment in South Yorkshire steel sites heralds better fume extraction, improved efficiency, and more profit

In 2009, Indian-owned Tata Steel was forced to make around 1,500 workers redundant when the company was hit by falling demand.

The company has managed to restructure its operations, however, and is now making a profit once again. As a result, it will now be investing a total of 4.5 million in energy efficiency and reliability improvements across four separate projects at its sites in Rotherham and Stocksbridge. The energy saved as a result of these measures will be equivalent to that needed to power 4,000 homes, whilst CO2 emissions will also be reduced and productivity will get a boost.

Having already invested more than 20 million in the region, the company will now be spending a further 2m on fume extraction systems, 1m on surface inspection equipment, 1m on furnaces and 500,000 on moulding equipment.

Despite the persistence of woeful reports on the economy in the UK and Europe, there is a healthy demand for steel at present, fuelled by high-tech industries such as aerospace and energy.
